Nutrient drink may aid memory improvement with Alzheimer’s

It shows us how little we really know about Alzheimer’s, and it implies just how complex a condition it really is when we see studies like this one reported on by the UPI.

In the story titled, Nutrient mix may help stave Alzheimer’s, an Amsterdam-based study showed a cognitive improvement in 40 % of the participants who drank a supplement containing uridine, choline and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA for 12 weeks.   MIT Researchers led by Richard Wurtman developed the nutrient mix which is made up of the building components to brain cells.  The researchers theorize that these nutrients may aid in the creation of synapses–the connection points between brain cells.

Now, back to my original statement about how little we know.  I think that it shows how little we really know about Alzheimer’s that after more than 25 years of intense research we are still uncovering rather simple approaches that may be affective approaches to improving cognition in the face of Alzheimer’s.  In my opinion, it also speaks to just how ineffective the current solutions are in combating the condition, and finally, I think it illustrates that we need to be doing everything we can to fight this disease.  We can’t overlook something cause it seems too simple.  It’s the simple solutions, the ones that we’ve overlooked for years, that can lead us to astounding results.

I read about your article on Andrew Weil’s website. I have had some memory loss from a medication I was on for 11 months and it’s gotten somewhat better, in the past year, but I would still like to have the problem resolved ASAP. Is there any possibility of getting your “cocktail”? If not can you suggest where I could get the uridine and choline and the amounts that should be taken and how many times daily? I presently take a group of vitamins, omega-3 and herbs.
Thanks for your help- Gary Norton

Gary, please visit Dr. Wurtman’s web page at MIT. From there you can get his direct email address in order to ask him the question directly.
