The Visual Art of Puzzles

A common theme of many of my presentations is the value of focused, challenging and purposeful mental activity as one of the key elements to a successful brain fitness program.  This is an enlightening presentation by Scott Kim, a gifted visual puzzle maker. It shows the the nearly limitless diversity of creativity and shows the variety of puzzles that are available to keep the brain actively engaged in more ways than just crossword puzzles and sudoku.

The one issue I have with Mr. Kim’s presentation is that he says that Crossword puzzles can forestall some of the effects of Alzheimer’s.  Well, it’s not as simple as that, and crossword puzzles are not the cure-all for dementia.  It takes more than crossword puzzles.  The brain must be cared for, well-fed, protected and challenged in order to give it the best chance of avoiding or slowing down dementia.

So, with that one caveat noted, take 11 minutes from your day and challenge your mind, and be amazed at the creativity and talent of Scott Kim and the Art of his puzzles.

For those who haven’t heard of Scott Kim or his work, he designs puzzles in the spirit of MC Escher’s art or the video game Tetris.  His work is visually stimulating and thought provoking.  It can be seen monthly in Discover Magazine.  This video is from the December 2008 Entertainment Gathering in Monterey, California.
